Major Changes in the New Standard

1 Expanded Scope of Application

Scope of the old-edition standard: Power electronic converter systems (PECS), any specified accessories and their components for electronic power conversion and electronic power switching, including means for control, protection, monitoring and measurement. It applies to equipment primarily intended for power conversion with a rated system voltage not exceeding 1 000 V AC or 1 500 V DC.

It also serves as a reference standard for the following products:

Power drive systems (PDS);

Stand-alone uninterruptible power supply (UPS);

Low-voltage stabilized DC power supplies;

Bidirectional converters.

Key Technical Revisions in the New Edition versus the Old Edition

Simplified the concept of DVC As, including its voltage-time curves

Improved consistency of “protection” and “insulation” concepts in accordance with IEC 61140

Updated touch-current limits and added protective-earth (PE) conductor current limits

Rewrote requirements for thin-layer tape materials and added relevant tests

Added insulation requirements for inner layers of multi-layer printed circuit boards

Updated mechanical-hazard provisions

Revised enclosure requirements

Updated wiring and connection specifications

Revised requirements for plastic enclosures

Added component-level requirements

Introduced multiple new tests (e.g. UV resistance, operating voltage, SPD performance, pre conditioning)

Updated information and marking requirements

Australia has enforced Version 2.0 of the standard. The Date of Withdrawal (DOW) for Version 2.0 in the EU falls on 9 August 2026 and is fast approaching. Given the substantial technical modifications in the new standard, manufacturers are advised to conduct early research, make advance preparations and achieve smooth compliance.
