CSIP-AUS Solar Compliance 2026: Essential Information for Every Australian EPC

CSIP-AUS stands for Common Smart Inverter Profile Australia. It is an IEEE 2030.5-based communication protocol that enables electricity distribution networks to transmit commands to and retrieve data from rooftop solar inverters and battery storage systems in near real time.
This protocol empowers Distribution Network Service Providers (DNSPs) to issue control orders such as solar output curtailment or generation shutdown when the grid lacks capacity to accommodate power from distributed solar assets.
Flexible export arrangements have been available in South Australia since 2021, and CSIP-AUS compliance has been mandatory for all inverters from July 2023. The state’s power utility previously ran an in-house CSIP-AUS testing laboratory, which ceased operations in Q4 2025. All testing functions have since been transferred to the Australian National University.
Emergency backstop controls enabled by CSIP-AUS have been a compulsory requirement for all newly commissioned solar systems since October 2024. The Solar Victoria Approved Inverter List (updated 2 June 2026) mandates full adherence to the IEEE 2030.5 standard.
CSIP-AUS emergency backstop functionality will be progressively rolled out across council and postcode zones starting June 2026, with full implementation finished between October and December 2026. The NSW Government’s CER Installer Portal will launch concurrently.Covered DNSPs include Ausgrid, Endeavour Energy, Essential Energy, alongside ACT networks managed by Evoenergy.
Dynamic grid connections have been offered as an opt-in alternative since late 2022 and are not yet compulsory for all new solar installations. CSIP-AUS access is available via participating distribution network providers.
Since 2025, CSIP-AUS has been deployed to coordinate virtual power plant (VPP) scheduling, emergency backstop responses and export limit management. It is designated as the preferred protocol under Western Australia’s Interoperability Statement, though compliance is not strictly mandatory.New regulatory rules released in May 2026 stipulate inverters must support remote disconnection or comply with a 1.5 kW maximum export cap.
The Northern Territory, Tasmania and remaining jurisdictions maintain distinct DNSP compliance criteria. For projects located outside the aforementioned states, confirm current regulatory requirements with the relevant local network operator.
